Current: Know when the internet is the problem.

Live download and upload in your menu bar. A warning when Wi-Fi says connected and the internet says otherwise. A speed test when you need proof.

macOS 14 Sonoma or later · Universal 2 (Apple silicon and Intel) · MIT licensed

Always in the menu bar

The Current panel in light mode: download 842 kB/s and upload 125 kB/s, the last hour chart with a speed test marked, 4.2 GB downloaded, internet reachable, a speed test of 995 Mbps down and 192 Mbps up, and Wi-Fi, AirDrop and Tailscale connections. The same Current panel in dark mode.
One panel, light or dark. Sample data.

What you get

Three answers, one glance.

Measured on your Mac. When Current can't measure, it says so.

Download 842 kB/s, upload 125 kB/s, and the last hour chart with a speed test marked. The same live rates and chart in dark mode.

Live traffic

What's moving

Download and upload, every second. The last hour, day, week or month is one click away.

Internet reachable, checked every 30 seconds. Speed test: 995 Mbps down, 192 Mbps up, Fine, 81 ms under load, 39 4K streams, a 50 GB game in 7 minutes, video calls smooth. The same internet status and speed test in dark mode.

Internet and speed

Whether it's really online

Wi-Fi can be connected with no internet behind it. Current checks every 30 seconds, and the speed test tells you what the line can actually do.

Connections: Wi-Fi 842 kB/s down, AirDrop and Continuity 2.4 MB/s, Tailscale 42 kB/s. The same connections in dark mode.

Connections

Every link in use

Wi-Fi, Ethernet, hotspot, VPN and the rest, each with its own rate. Idle ones stay hidden.

A closer look

Rendered by the app itself, from sample data.

Connections

Eight kinds of link.

Each one shows up only while it's in use.

Wi-Fi

Your wireless link.

Ethernet

Any wired adapter or dock with a live link.

Hotspot

Phone tethering. Current asks before a speed test spends your data.

Thunderbolt Bridge

A cable between two Macs, counted once.

Bluetooth

Internet from a phone. Headphones don't count.

AirDrop & Continuity

Transfers to nearby Apple devices.

Tailscale

Your tailnet, kept out of the totals.

VPN

Any other tunnel, never counted twice.

Local first

Your history stays on your Mac.

No account, no server, no analytics.

  • It counts bytes and never looks inside them, so it can't see where you browse.
  • History is one local file. Export it, back it up or delete it.
  • Internet checks call Google, then Cloudflare. They see your IP, like any website does. You can turn them off.
  • The speed test runs only when you ask, against Apple's servers.

Installation

Thirty seconds to install.

  1. Download

Get Current.dmg from the button above.

  2. Drag to Applications

Open the DMG and drop Current on the Applications folder.

  3. Open it

Your rates appear in the menu bar. Click them for the rest.

Open source

MIT licensed, and readable end to end.

Native Swift, no dependencies. Read what it measures and who it talks to, or build it yourself with ./scripts/build-app.sh.

Questions

Frequently asked.

Can Current see what I browse?
No. It reads byte counters and never captures packets.
Why don't my totals match my bill?
Current counts your local network and VPN overhead, and nothing while it's closed. Your provider counts its own network, for every device on your plan.
How much data does a speed test use?
Whatever 12 seconds at full speed costs: a few hundred MB on most lines, a gigabyte or more on a fast one. On a hotspot, Current asks first.
Will it slow my Mac down?
It reads counters once a second, saves once a minute and checks the internet every 30 seconds. Nothing else runs.
Does it start at login?
If you want it to. The first time you open Current, it asks, and it changes nothing until you answer. Switch it any time in Settings > General > Startup.
